History of Hermanus High School
Hermanus High School has a rich and storied history that dates back well over a century, shaping it into the esteemed institution it is today. Here’s a glimpse into the fascinating journey of the school:
The origins of Hermanus High School can be traced back to the late 19th century when education in the area began to take shape. Legend has it that the first school, St. Peter’s Mission School, was established in 1868, followed by the founding of the Dutch Reformed Church School in 1884. These early educational endeavors laid the groundwork for what would eventually become the modern-day Hermanus High School.
In 1897, a significant development occurred when the two schools amalgamated, forming the foundation of the public school system in the region. Construction on the iconic stone building, which has since become synonymous with the school’s identity, commenced in 1907 and was officially occupied in 1911. Under the leadership of Mr. S.G. du Toit, the school attained primary school status in 1918, marking another milestone in its evolution.
Despite facing challenges such as a shortage of facilities, the school continued to expand its offerings and influence within the community. In 1941, Hermanus High School was granted high school status, paving the way for the inaugural matric class to write their examinations in December 1942. Over the years, the school persevered through various trials, including a struggle with the Education Department to secure additional classrooms.
The turning point came in 1977 when construction was completed on a new school campus, providing much-needed space and resources for the growing student population. This modern facility, equipped with state-of-the-art amenities, including a gymnasium, sports fields, tennis courts, and computer centers, has since become the proud home of Hermanus High School.
From its humble beginnings with just 60 learners in 1941, Hermanus High School has flourished into a renowned institution with a student body of over 1000. Today, the school is celebrated not only for its academic excellence but also for its achievements in sports, culture, and community engagement. As Hermanus High School prepares to commemorate its 85th anniversary in 2026, it does so with a legacy of resilience, innovation, and unwavering commitment to shaping the future leaders of tomorrow.

About Waldorf School
The Hermanus Waldorf School has a remarkable history, rooted in a deep commitment to inclusivity, accessibility, and community empowerment. Here’s a glimpse into the journey of our school:
Founded in 1994 by a group of visionary parents, the Hermanus Waldorf School emerged from a recognition of the limited nursery facilities available to the local black and coloured communities, particularly in areas like Zwellihle and Mount Pleasant. With a single nursery classroom on shared premises in Hemel en Aarde, the school’s founders embarked on a mission to create a nurturing and inclusive learning environment where every child’s needs would be met, regardless of social or economic circumstances.
Central to the vision of the school was the belief that the Waldorf approach to education could provide children with the self-confidence and purpose needed to effect positive change in their lives and communities. Through a holistic educational philosophy that values creativity, imagination, and individuality, the school sought to empower students to become agents of change and inspiration in their communities.
Over the years, the school experienced significant growth and expansion, thanks to the support of sponsors, philanthropists, and community members who shared in its vision. By 1997, the demand for Waldorf education had grown to the point where the original nursery facilities were no longer sufficient. With perseverance and determination, the school successfully secured additional space and resources, paving the way for further growth and development.
In 1999, with the assistance of the municipality, the school secured a 99-year lease for its current premises, marking a significant milestone in its journey. With a growing student body and expanding facilities, the Hermanus Waldorf School continued to thrive, becoming a cornerstone of the local community.
In 2023, the school embarked on an exciting new phase of its evolution by adding a high school to its educational offerings, further expanding its reach and impact. As the school celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2024, it stood as a testament to the power of vision, perseverance, and community collaboration, with 266 pupils ranging from kindergarten to Grade 9.
The Hermanus Waldorf School remains committed to its founding principles of inclusivity, accessibility, and holistic education, empowering generations of students to realize their full potential and contribute positively to society.
