Hermanus Internet Connectivity Issues Explained and is expected to continue until at least 16 June

As of 5 June 2025, South Africa is experiencing internet slowdowns due to emergency maintenance on the West Africa Cable System (WACS), a critical undersea cable that connects the country to Europe.

What’s Happening

A fault was detected in a branching unit near Swakopmund, Namibia. This unit helps direct and power data through the WACS cable. A repair ship has retrieved the damaged unit, and engineers are working to replace it. Once repairs are complete and tests are successful, the cable will resume full functionality.

Who’s Affected

Users in the Western and Southern parts of South Africa, including areas like Cape Town and Hermanus, are most affected. These regions rely heavily on the WACS cable for international connectivity. Northern and Eastern areas that use alternate cables like Seacom and EASSy have seen minimal disruption.

Mitigation Measures

Some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are rerouting traffic through alternative cable systems, including Google’s Equiano and the Seacom cable. Despite these efforts, users may still experience slower speeds, high latency, and occasional interruptions until the WACS repairs are complete.

Estimated Repair Timeline

The maintenance began on 1 June 2025 and is expected to continue until at least 16 June. However, the timeline may change depending on sea conditions and the complexity of the repair work.

Additional Information

You can monitor ongoing connectivity issues via Downdetector South Africa or your ISP’s support pages.

If you’re currently experiencing internet issues, they may be unrelated to the WACS cable. Please provide details about your Internet Service Provider (ISP), the type of connection you’re using (e.g., fibre, LTE, ADSL), and a description of the problem. This information will help in providing specific troubleshooting steps or updates from your ISP.

If you need information on a specific internet service provider (ISP) or troubleshooting help for slow or disrupted internet during the WACS cable outage, please let them know:

  • The name of your ISP (e.g. Afrihost, Telkom, Vox, RSAWEB, etc.)
  • The type of connection you use (e.g. fibre, LTE, ADSL)
  • A short description of the problem you’re experiencing (e.g. no connection, very slow speeds, frequent disconnections)

With that information they can give you:

  • A status update (if your ISP has acknowledged the problem)
  • Specific troubleshooting steps you can try
  • Suggestions for temporary workarounds (like DNS changes or mobile data use)
  • When you might expect normal service to resume
