Onrus Voted Top Beach in Hermanus

Onrus Voted Top Beach in Hermanus – Hermanus have mainly 3 beaches where locals and holiday makers can enjoy the sun and crispy salt waters of the Atlantic Ocean. We ask 200 residents of Hermanus which beach was their favorite and Voelklip got 28% of the votes, Grotto 34%. and Onrus Beach got the most votes with 38% making it the Top Beach in Hermanus.

Onrusrivier or simply Onrus that means restless in Afrikaans is a popular holiday location for South Africans. The Onrus river mount into the Atlantic ocean and provides great fun for adults and kids to swim as the water is a couple degrees warmer than the ocean.

Activities at Onrus Beach

Relaxing in the Cape Town summer sun is only the beginning of what Onrus Beach can offer visitors. For bird watchers Onrus is a paradise and they will find an abundance of birds species and dassies in the area.

You will always find young people playing some sort of sport like volleyball, touch rugby and beach tennis. Lifeguards are on duty in the high seasons when the beach get really busy.

Metal Detecting at Onrus beach is another popular way of passing time and you would see people metal detecting on a daily basis trying their luck to strike it rich.

Fishing at Onrus Beach

There are many species of fish that you can catch from the rocks of Onrus Beach. The best times to go fishing in this area is about one hour before high tide in the afternoon however you can still fish during anytime of the day.

Fish species that you can catch here is Galjoen, Mussel Cracker, Hottentot and Kool Stert. These are all editable fish and are highly in demand between the locals which like to braai [BBQ] or pan fry the fish.

Eating and Drinking

There are no alcoholic beverages allowed on the beach but if you are in a mood for a cocktail, beer or a glass of wine you will find a restaurant overlooking the ocean and beach just 2 minutes walk away. You will find a kiosk where you can buy takeaways at affordable prices or dine at one of two restaurants in the area.

Then finally there is an Ice Cream truck to treat the kids after a long joyful day at Onrus Beach.

Two other beaches you can visit is Grotto Beach and Voelklip but our favorite beach will have to be Onrus Beach for its soft white sand, warm river water and energetic atmosphere.
