Ariving at Fernkloof

I was slightly concerned about our safety as this is my first visit in 25 years and I had some youngsters with me. The first thing we noticed was that there is a enough parking and there was already 7 vehicles parked upon our arrival aroun 08:00 in the morning. Knowing that there was already people on the path made us feel a bit safer as I have heard that there were some nasty baboons in the area.

The Walk

To get to the first dam (there are 3 dams) we heard is about half an hours walk. So we double checked our bags for water, sunblock, caps and towels as we will be there for at least half a day.

The path started very smoothly and after about a 10 min walk we had to challenge a steep climb in the mountains. We found that the route was well maintained and there was always an option to climb the steep stairs of a flat surface that curved up the mountain.

Visiting Fernkloof Nature Reserve

Be assured that the hiking trail is extremely steep and if you are not fit you will have to take 5 minute breaks. The climb is roughly 10 to 15 minutes and exhausting but absolutaly worth it.

You will find breathtaking views as you do the trail up to the first dam in Fernkloof Nature Reserve and due to the constant curvature of the path ways you will notice that the view also change that makes it even more spectacular.

Arriving at Fernkloofs first Dam

Being here about 25 years ago I have truly forgotten how beautiful Fernkloof can be. The views gave you a feeling of being in another world and the scenary of the mountains and the clear deep water gave us such an feeling of relaxation.

We found a flat piece of land where we could picnic while the kids jumped of the reservoir tower and many different cliffs. They nearly spent 3 hours in the water before coming to our camping spot to drink water and eat some hotdogs.

Is Fernkloof Nature Reserve Trail Worth Hiking

At round about 11:30 it started to get windy and we decided to packup and leave. There are no refusal bins so please when you leave pick up your trash and take it with you until you have reached a trash bin where you can through it away.

We recommend a visit to the Fernkloof Nature Reserve Dams

You don’t need to be super fit to walk the trail to the dams. Rest along the route if you feel tired. Always remember to take fresh water, sunblock, a towel and a cap when you decide to visit the reserve.

There is cellphone signal almost all the way so you can call if you need to.

We will highly recommend a visit to Fernkloof Dam and this surely will be on our top 10 list of things to do in Hermanus. According to Trip Advisor 96% of visitors at Fernkloof Nature Reserve will recommend the walk.
