Visiting Hermanus in Winter Months – Hermanus is one of the most popular holiday and touristy destinations in South Africa. It became very popular for the Southern Wright and Humpback whale watching festivals that was first called the Abalone Festival (perlemoen fees) and later changed to the Hermanus Whale Festival. Summer time can be great fun with loads of activities including zip lining, quad biking, horse riding and swimming in one of the three amazing beaches at Hermanus. But what happens in Hermanus in winter times?
What type of weather can you expect in winter time?
Just before Winter (that officially starts on the 1st of June on the South African calendar) Hermanus get strong North Western winds of up to 100 km per hour that can last for almost a month. Daytime temperatures can average around 11 degrees Celsius and night times can go as low as 2 degrees Celsius. There is more rainfall in the winter than in the summer in Hermanus. The rainfall here average around 600 mm per year. In general Hermanus has a wet, cold and windy winter.
Does Hermanus still get Tourists in Wintertime?
Amazingly the answer is yes. South Africa and especially Hermanus is still a popular holiday choice during the Dutch and German summer holiday breaks. Visiting Table Mountain, shopping at the V & A Waterfront, visiting the National Kruger Park trying to get to see the Big 5 and Shark Diving is the top tourist activities for the European, Chinese and American visitors. Late in winter you will start seeing whales arriving in Hermanus and they come very close to the shore lines making it possible for people to see them clearly and hear them breath.

Although Hermanus is cold and windy in winter we still have very pleasant and sunny days that can reach up to 22 degrees Celsius. These days can be used to do shark cage diving in Gansbaai that is only 40 km from Hermanus or take a walk alongside many path ways with breath-taking scenic views.
