The shelter provides a safe and nurturing environment where animals receive proper medical care, nutritious food, and the love and attention they deserve. HAWS is committed to finding loving and permanent homes for the animals in their care through responsible adoption processes.
In addition to sheltering animals, HAWS actively engages in various community programs and initiatives aimed at promoting responsible pet ownership and raising awareness about animal welfare. They conduct educational campaigns, outreach programs, and workshops to foster a greater understanding of the importance of compassion, respect, and responsible care for animals.
HAWS also offers low-cost spay/neuter and vaccination services to help control the population of stray animals and prevent the spread of diseases. By providing affordable veterinary services, they contribute to reducing the number of unwanted animals and improving the overall health and well-being of the animal population in the Hermanus area.
The Hermanus Animal Welfare Society relies on the support and generosity of volunteers, donors, and the local community to continue their vital work. They welcome volunteers who can assist with animal care, fundraising events, administrative tasks, and other areas of need. Donations, both monetary and in-kind, are crucial for sustaining their operations and providing essential care for the animals.

HAWS, situated at 4 Steenbras Street, Industria, Hermanus, has been serving the local communities of Hermanus, Mount Pleasant, Zwelihle, and Hawston since 1983. The organization was fortunate to receive a generous donation of the property, which has enabled them to provide essential care and services for animals in need.
Starting with just a few kennels, HAWS has grown over the years and now boasts its own cattery, kennels, and an animal welfare clinic at their premises. These facilities play a crucial role in providing a safe haven for animals and ensuring their well-being.
To further support their operations, HAWS operates two charity retail shops. One is conveniently located in the CBD, while the other is situated at the Gateway Centre. These shops serve as important sources of income for HAWS, generating funds that contribute significantly to the organization’s operations and services.
It’s worth noting that HAWS relies solely on its own fundraising efforts to sustain its operations. They do not receive any financial support or assistance from government departments. The community’s support, through purchases at their retail shops and participation in fundraising activities, plays a vital role in enabling HAWS to continue its valuable work.
By generating income through their retail shops and fundraising endeavors, HAWS can provide the necessary care, veterinary services, and support to animals in the area. Their commitment to self-sustainability ensures that they can operate independently and make a meaningful difference in the lives of animals without relying on external funding sources.
How to Adopt A Pet
Explore Available Pets: Visit the HAWS website or their shelter location to browse the animals currently available for adoption. You’ll find a diverse range of cats, dogs, and other potential furry companions eagerly waiting for their forever homes. Each animal profile typically includes a description, photos, and relevant details about their temperament and history.
Visit the Shelter: Plan a visit to the HAWS shelter, located at 4 Steenbras Street, Industria, Hermanus. This allows you to meet the animals in person, interact with them, and gauge compatibility. The shelter staff will be happy to answer any questions and provide guidance throughout the process.
Application and Screening: Complete an adoption application form provided by HAWS. The application helps the staff understand your preferences, lifestyle, and expectations, ensuring a suitable match between you and your potential pet. HAWS may require a screening process, which can include an interview, reference checks, and a home visit to ensure the well-being of the animal in its new environment.
Adoption Fee: HAWS charges an adoption fee that contributes to the care and well-being of their animals. The fee covers essential veterinary treatments, vaccinations, spaying/neutering, microchipping, and other necessary procedures. Paying the adoption fee is a vital part of the adoption process, as it demonstrates your commitment to providing a loving and responsible home for your new pet.
Adoption Agreement: Once your application is approved, you will be required to sign an adoption agreement. This agreement outlines your responsibilities as a pet owner and confirms that you understand and agree to provide proper care, attention, and a safe environment for your new furry companion.
Post-Adoption Support: HAWS is committed to the well-being of their animals even after adoption. They provide post-adoption support, including guidance on pet care, training resources, and assistance with any challenges you may face along the way. Haws Primary Focus
Our primary focus revolves around responding to reports of animal abuse and providing care for starving, maltreated, abandoned, and sick animals. We work diligently to rehome these animals, giving them a second chance at a better life. Additionally, we collaborate with the Municipality’s Law Enforcement Department, under a contractual agreement, to assist with stray and nuisance animals. If these animals remain unclaimed by their owners for seven days, they become part of our population, and we initiate our adoption process.
Our kennels have the capacity to accommodate approximately 50 to 60 dogs/puppies, while the same number of cats/kittens can be housed during peak periods. We have separate cat rooms, each equipped with an outdoor area. For dogs, we provide a combination of small and spacious cages based on breed size. They also have ample grassy spaces where they can freely roam and even enjoy a refreshing dip in small plastic pools on hot days. In special cases, we have a volunteer dog behaviorist who assists with challenging situations, providing training and stimulation for our puppies.
