We frequently make the trip from Hermanus to Gordons Bay/Strand and often indulge in a Chicken Mayo Pizza at Gringo’s in Kleinmond Harbour. Usually, their pizzas are delicious, but there was one unfortunate occasion when the pizza had a strong odor, leading us to discard it.
After avoiding the place for a while, we decided to give it another shot on Wednesday, May 1st, a public holiday. This time, we opted for chicken schnitzels instead of pizza.
While chatting with the neighboring table, I inquired about the chicken schnitzels. Unfortunately, the lady shook her head, indicating they were tough and tasted reheated.
Despite this warning, we proceeded to order Hake and Calamari x 2. Each plate, priced at R175, included one piece of hake, 100g of calamari, and chips. However, upon the food’s arrival, we had to wait for cutlery. When a knife was finally brought to me, it was dirty, requiring me to request a clean one from another staff member.
To our dismay, both plates were disappointing. Mine contained only six and a half thin pieces of calamari and a piece of undercooked, watery hake. The chips were overly oily, resulting in a disastrous meal experience.
Upon receiving the bill, the waitress didn’t inquire about our satisfaction or attempt to address the food quality issues.
Despite the unsatisfactory experience, we paid the bill, totaling R600 plus a tip, though the service hardly warranted it. As someone who has worked as a waiter and manager for six years in the past, I found it difficult not to tip.
While I initially hesitated to share this experience, I feel compelled to convey the truth. We didn’t return the food or request to speak with a manager, as I suspect the waitress would have been reprimanded on the spot. However, our decision had nothing to do with her poor service or the subpar food; it was solely due to her unsanitary appearance, including yellow, dirt-encrusted fingernails.
Regrettably, Gringos Kleinmond, you’ve lost our patronage forever. Despite our effort to support you by making the trip, we received nothing but disappointment in return for our hard-earned R600.
